Learning objectives

  • Understand the metabolic changes associated with menopause
  • Understand the roles of estrogen and insulin in these metabolic changes
  • Increase confidence in prescribing hormone therapy and other pharmacotherapy in management of menopausal metabolic risks.Β

Summary:

Menopause is a time of increased cardiovascular and metabolic risk, with much of this risk associated with changes in weight and metabolism, including an increased risk of diabetes. This lecture provides information on the movement of adipose tissue from subcutaneous to visceral and the associated risks and effects on metabolism and insulin resistance. Metabolic rates change not only in magnitude, but in the types of nutrients burned and the dietary needs of women. Understanding the physiology of these changes provides the framework for appropriate lifestyle recommendations and pharmacotherapy. Hormone therapy has a significant impact on the risks during this timeframe, and the benefits and risks of both oral and transdermal therapy are reviewed.Β
